Access restrictions, fuel or toll surcharges, customs work and specialist handling can also affect the total. FTL uses dedicated trailer capacity for one consignment. LTL and groupage combine compatible smaller consignments in shared capacity. FTL often suits larger, direct or handling-sensitive loads; LTL or groupage can offer better value for pallets and part loads when the schedule allows consolidation.
The exact documents depend on the goods, route, Incoterm and who is responsible for the declarations. International commercial road journeys normally use a CMR consignment note, while customs movements may also need declaration references, licences or transit documents. The permitted weight depends on the vehicle and axle configuration and must not exceed the manufacturer's or ministry plate.
